2007 Data Book Cover

Each year, the Annie. E. Casey Foundation publishes a national KIDS COUNT Data Book reflecting rankings for 10 measures of child health and well-being. Additional indicators in the Data Book cover demographic factors, child health, education, economic conditions of families, and children living in vulnerable households.

According to the national 2007 KIDS COUNT Data Book, released July 2007, North Dakota has an overall rank of 8 out of 50 states. North Dakota ranked 1st in the lowest percent teens not attending school and not working and 2nd in the percent of children in single-parent families.

Though North Dakota compares well nationally, areas of concern still exist. Highlights of North Dakota data in the 2007 Data Book include:

  1. Percent low-birthweight babies: 6.6% in 2004
  2. Infant mortality rate: 5.6 per 1,000 live births in 2004
  3. Child death rate: 26 per 100,000 children ages 1 to 14 in 2004
  4. Teen death rate: 61 per 100,000 teens ages 15 to 19 in 2004
  5. Teen birth rate: 27 per 1,000 females ages 15 to 19 in 2004
  6. Percent of teens who are high school dropouts: 5% of teens ages 16 to 19 in 2005
  7. Percent of teens not attending school and not working: 5% of teens ages 16 to 19 in 2005
  8. Percent of children living in families where no parent has full-time, year-round employment: 28% in 2005
  9. Percent of children in poverty: 13% in 2005
  10. Percent of children in single-parent families: 23% in 2005
